Snowflake Data Access Onboarding

MAFS provides Snowflake data access through a private listing. This guide explains the available access approaches and what your organization can expect during onboarding.

To get started, contact the MAFS team to discuss your data-access needs. MAFS will confirm your approved access scope and the appropriate onboarding approach before data is made available.

If Your Organization Has a Snowflake Account

MAFS supports a standardized onboarding process for client-owned Snowflake accounts.

As part of onboarding, MAFS will request identifiers for the Snowflake account that should receive access. Your team can obtain these details by running the following query in the relevant Snowflake account:

SELECT
CURRENT_ACCOUNT()           AS account_locator,
CURRENT_ORGANIZATION_NAME() AS organization_name,
CURRENT_ACCOUNT_NAME()      AS account_name,
CURRENT_REGION()            AS region;

If access is needed in multiple Snowflake environments—for example, production and test or development—MAFS will request identifiers for each applicable account.

Note: In Snowflake, each environment is a separate Snowflake account. For this onboarding process, MAFS provisions access per account.

After MAFS confirms the requested access, MAFS will publish a private listing to the designated account and provide the listing global name and any other information your team needs to import it. Importing a private listing requires the ACCOUNTADMIN role or another role with the CREATE DATABASE and IMPORT SHARE privileges.

Your Snowflake account does not need to be in the same cloud platform or region as MAFS. MAFS will confirm the applicable sharing approach for your environment during onboarding.

Once the listing is imported, your team queries the mounted database using its own Snowflake warehouse. The imported database is read-only; your organization is responsible for the compute used to query the data.

Your team may import the listing through Snowsight or SQL in accordance with its internal Snowflake administration practices. MAFS will provide the applicable listing global name and configuration details during onboarding.

For background on the Snowflake workflow, see:

After MAFS publishes the listing, there may be an expected lag before it is ready to import if your Snowflake account is in a different region or cloud. In Snowsight, open Data sharing → External sharing, go to Shared with you under Privately shared listings, select the listing, and click Get. Wait until the listing is ready to import (this can take several minutes or longer, depending on data size and region), then complete the import. If the listing never appears, never becomes ready to import, or import fails after that, contact the MAFS team.

If Your Organization Does Not Have a Snowflake Account

Contact the MAFS team before proceeding.

MAFS will review your organization’s requirements and determine the appropriate approach for providing access. This path is handled case by case, and MAFS will provide the relevant setup details after confirming the solution.

Trial, Government, or VPS Snowflake Accounts

If your organization uses a trial, government, or Virtual Private Snowflake (VPS) account, contact MAFS before proceeding.

These environments may have additional requirements or limitations. MAFS will review your environment and confirm the appropriate access approach.

Data Access and Entitlements

MAFS provisions access based on your organization’s approved data-access scope.

Your organization will only be able to access the data that MAFS has approved and provisioned for its Snowflake account. Contact the MAFS team to request changes to your access scope.
